About

My name is Emory. I work in gaming & tech full-time, and draw stuff in my spare time. If you’ve got more questions that aren’t answered here you can contact me at emoryArt@gmail.com

Do you take custom commissions?

Yes! And no. I have a full time job that I love working at and a couple of other personal projects that I’m usually chipping away at, so my free time is pretty limited. I do however have some time open to work on commissions that I think are really interesting or would let me exercise some new art muscles.

If you have an idea that you think my art style would be well-suited for and are willing to pay my hourly rate, contact me at emoryArt@gmail.com with the subject line “COMMISSION REQUEST – <Your name here>” and we can chat 🙂

Where / How did you learn how to draw?

When I was a kid I’d get up every Saturday morning to watch Digimon and Pokemon, then draw bad fanart. At some point in middle school a friend lent me a tiny Wacom Graphire drawing tablet and I taught myself Photoshop & Flash. During high school I basically only drew anime / video game fanart, which let me tell you, is a terrible way to learn art fundamentals.

I went to college to study business (I was a somewhat-responsible Asian child), but continued to practice art in my free time via online tutorials, Youtube, and some elective art classes. There are a ton of great free and paid resources out there, and the art community is very welcoming to newcomers. I don’t consider myself particularly talented or good at art, I just practice a lot.

What tools / programs do you use?

I used to use a Wacom Intuos 4, which served me well until I recently got a great deal on a Cintiq 22 HD, which I now use as my primary drawing hardware.

For painting I use Adobe Photoshop CS5, and for vector work I use Illustrator CS5.

Can I use your art on my website or elsewhere?

I’d prefer to be contacted first about the use of my art for non-commercial purposes. Finding out my work is somewhere that I didn’t know about is one of the worst ways to attract my attention.

If you’d like to license my art for commercial purposes, contact me at emoryArt@gmail.com

How do you decide what to draw?

For fan art it’s whatever I’m playing or watching. I don’t have a ton of free time nowadays, but I like playing multiplayer games (LoL, Overwatch, etc) with the homies and RPGs that have pretty graphics.

For original work I generally stare at my wall until inspiration strikes.

Actually I wish, that would be a lot easier. I usually to get a vague idea of a subject or vision in my head, then spend some time gathering ref from Google images or taking really bad photos in the bathroom mirror (human anatomy is hard OK). You can check out my blog for some process GIFs to see the actual technical process.

I bought one of your things!

OK this isn’t really a question, but I love when people send me pictures of my prints hanging up on their wall. If you’ve bought something of mine, send me a pic of its new home! You can contact me via email, twitter, tumblr, or Instagram.

How do I give you my money?

I mean, you can totally buy stuff from my shop, which puts money in my pocket and art on your walls.

But, if for some reason you’re feeling particularly kind, here’s a donation button. If you include your e-mail address I’ll scribble you a quick doodle as thanks!

Why is this site called “Human for Scale”?

I needed a website name, but “Emory Art” has exceedingly poor SEO since there’s a college in Georgia called Emory University and they’ve got an art program.

I decided on Human for Scale since a really enjoy drawing giant monsters / creatures with a small human in the painting somewhere to emphasize the scale.

Yes, I know it kind of looks like “Human for Sale”. Sorry, I don’t participate in that kind of business here.

What’s with Pearl Milk Tea?

A lot of people asked why I make cutesy Pearl Milk Tea merch. It’s a bit of a departure from my regular artwork, but it’s fun to take a break from illustrations to do some vector work. Turns out it also sells well, which helps fund my milk tea drinking habit.

Can I call you senpai?

No.

Why do you potato so much? Draw faster!

Wow potato mouseover text. He must not be lazy at all.

What is this website built in?

This website is based on the free Pure theme by G3Themes. I’m absolute rubbish with CSS so their theme was a great place to start. I’ve customized mine a bit, but if you’re looking to build a similar site I’d recommend downloading Pure and using that as a base.

Can you draw <insert anime / game / your favorite thing>?

Only if it’s my favorite too.
